A skitmaking attempt in Lagos reportedly took a tragic turn when a young skit maker drowned in a lagoon located near a residential estate. The incident has drawn significant attention, with many concerned about the safety of Lagos waterways and the increasing frequency of drowning incidents in the area.
The news was first shared by X user @SirJarus, who reported the tragedy and sparked renewed discussions around safety precautions in Lagos. In a post on social media, @SirJarus wrote, “Sad evening here. Skitmaking gone wrong. Someone drowned in the Lagoon that borders my estate this evening. They were acting skit. Yet to be found.” The post quickly gained traction as the tragedy unfolded, with many expressing their condolences and concern.
In the post, @SirJarus raised alarm about the growing number of drowning cases in Lagos, particularly in its lagoons. He highlighted that this incident marks the second drowning in just three days within a two-kilometre stretch of the lagoon. This alarming trend prompted the user to comment, “Second case of drowning in three days. I’m now beginning to think there is at least one case of drowning in Lagoon across Lagos on daily basis. Because if this small stretch of Lagoon (less than two kilometers) records casualty almost every other week (mostly site workers that go to swim after work, security personnel, dredging workers etc), I wonder how it is in the 99.9% of other Lagoon banks around Lagos.”
The frequency of these incidents seems to have become so common that it no longer surprises residents. @SirJarus reflected on the casual nature with which these tragedies are accepted, saying, “It’s no longer even news here. You just step out of your house and casually hear, ‘someone drowned in Osa today.’ I also take evening walk to the bank of the Lagoon at least once in two weeks, but I don’t step into water for any reason.” He continued to express his hope, albeit with little optimism, that the young skitmaker might somehow be found alive, despite the dire situation.
"One can only pray – against hope – that the young skitmaker currently in the water returns alive!" he added.
The situation took another turn when it was reported that the estate security personnel had apprehended the other skitmakers involved in the incident and handed them over to the relevant law enforcement agency. This action has brought the attention of authorities to the case, though the full details of the investigation remain to be seen.
Lagos State’s response to the alleged drowning of skit maker
As of the time this report was published, there has been no official confirmation from local authorities or the Lagos state government regarding the incident. Despite the widespread social media coverage and the concerns raised by residents, the state government has yet to issue a statement or respond publicly to the tragic event. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation continues. In the meantime, the community remains in shock, with many questioning the safety of Lagos’ waterways and the potential for further tragedies if more stringent safety measures are not put in place.
