The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a young mother in Warri for reportedly throwing her 10-month-old baby into a river, a shocking act that has sparked widespread concern.
The incident was confirmed through an official statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who disclosed the details to journalists. According to him, the mother admitted to her actions during police interrogation and provided a heartbreaking explanation for her decision.
SP Edafe revealed that the woman confessed to being overwhelmed by societal pressures and emotional abuse from those around her. She stated that her friends and other acquaintances persistently mocked her for having a child out of wedlock, which caused her significant emotional distress.
“When I asked her why she did it, she said her friends and other women abuse and shame her that the child does not have a father, and that’s the reason she threw the baby away,” SP Edafe disclosed. The young mother claimed that these constant insults and shaming led her to take the drastic and tragic step of throwing her baby into the river.
While condemning the act in the strongest terms, SP Edafe urged society to exercise caution in how they treat and speak to individuals. He emphasized that although the woman’s actions are indefensible, the harsh and judgmental attitudes of people can contribute to pushing individuals to the brink of despair.
“That’s not a justification for her action, but we should also be mindful of what we say to people,” he stated, calling for greater sensitivity and understanding within communities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
