A suspected cable vandal, identified as Muktar Rabiu, who was electrocuted while attempting to steal cables in Abuja, is set to face charges once he has recovered from his injuries. This information was revealed in a statement issued by the FCT Police Command Spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, on Monday.

Adeh explained that this incident marks the second time Rabiu had been caught for a similar crime, as he had been arrested for a related offense only a few weeks earlier. According to the spokesperson, Rabiu was initially apprehended on November 21, 2024, during a routine patrol along Christ the King Road in Gwagwalada, Abuja. On this occasion, the suspect was found in possession of high-voltage cables, which authorities believe were stolen from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

Following his initial arrest, Rabiu was charged and subsequently arraigned in court. During the trial, the court sentenced him to community service, which included enduring 42 strokes of the cane as a form of punishment for his crime. However, in a shocking turn of events, just a few weeks after his sentencing, Rabiu once again attempted to steal electrical components. This time, while attempting to dismantle an electrical apparatus, he suffered a severe electrocution, resulting in critical injuries that required immediate medical attention. Rabiu is now receiving treatment in a hospital for his injuries.

In her statement, Adeh assured that Rabiu will be charged with the appropriate offenses once he has fully recovered from the electrocution. She also issued a stern warning to criminals engaged in similar acts, urging them to cease their criminal activities. Adeh emphasized that the FCT Police Command remains committed to the protection of public infrastructure and will take all necessary steps to safeguard it from vandals and thieves.

“The FCT command reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and has issued a stern warning against acts of vandalism and theft of public utilities. Such actions not only jeopardize lives but also disrupt essential services that communities rely on,” Adeh said. She further called on the public to play an active role in safeguarding their communities by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting any suspicious activities to the police. She stressed that community participation is key in combating vandalism and maintaining a safe and secure environment for all citizens. The FCT Police Command has also urged the public to use its emergency lines for reporting any incidents of crime or vandalism in their areas.
