A student of the University of Port Harcourt has been arrested by Edo state police command for stabbing his girlfriend to death.
According to the suspect, his girlfriend came from Asaba to Benin and accused him of being a kidnapper; an allegation he said led to the violence.
Chidi Nwabuzor, the PRO of the Edo state police, confirmed the incident to Newsmen Wednesday.
The spokesperson said the crime was committed on August 21 at number 10, Osahon Street, Ogheghe Quarters, off Sapele Road in Benin City.
The suspect identified as Victor Ochonogor was taken into custody in Edo on Monday over the death of Success Regha.
Emmanuel Momoh, the landlord of the apartment who reported the matter to the police, was quoted to have said that the lovebirds locked themselves inside the house when the violence broke out.
Ochonogor, a student of Applied and Industrial Chemistry, was said to have stabbed the deceased in the neck and chest with a knife.
Nwabuzor said the police recovered the knife and rushed the suspect, who also had a stab wound on his neck, to Stella Obasanjo Hospital.
The police PRO said the deceased’s body was deposited at the hospital mortuary.
“Items recovered from the suspect are two blood-stained knives, two iPhones, one Nokia phone, one laptop, and two ATM cards,” Nwabuzor said.
“The case was later transferred to the homicide section, State Criminal Investigation Department Benin. The suspect will be charged in court for murder soon.”
While being paraded before the press, Ochonogor was reported to have told journalists that he had been dating his late girlfriend for three years.
