A young lady has come forward to share her shocking experience after being sued for ₦2.5 million by a University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) master’s student. The lawsuit, filed on the grounds of alleged emotional damages and fraud, stemmed from her refusal to engage in a romantic relationship with the man.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), she narrated in detail how her initial encounter with the man led to a series of events that escalated into legal action against her.
According to her, she first met the man while she was in her final year at Kwara State University (KWASU). From the very beginning, he expressed strong romantic interest in her, but she made it explicitly clear that she was not interested in pursuing a relationship.
Despite her clear rejection, the man persistently sent her money, gifts, and other forms of financial support, even though she never asked for them. She stated that she repeatedly declined his advances, yet he continued showering her with money and expensive presents.
However, when she finally confronted him and firmly reiterated that she had no romantic interest in him, she was met with an unexpected response. The man, feeling scorned, decided to take legal action against her, accusing her of fraudulently accepting his money under false pretenses.
The situation took a serious turn when she started receiving phone calls from both his lawyer and the police, summoning her to the station regarding the case. She was even threatened that an official letter would be sent to her university if she refused to cooperate.
Recounting the distressing ordeal, she stated that she was only able to clear her name because their chat history proved she had never encouraged his advances nor requested any money from him. Instead, she had consistently rejected his monetary gifts and had always been honest about her lack of romantic feelings.
Providing further insight into the case, she shared more details about how the man’s obsession with her led to extreme measures. After their interactions ceased, he took the matter to higher authorities. The case was eventually brought before the government house for mediation, where he insisted on one of two outcomes—either she agreed to marry him, or they would settle the matter in court.
To her utter disbelief, the man even claimed that he had gone as far as processing a Canadian visa for couples, including her name in the application, despite knowing that she had no interest in a relationship with him.
Reflecting on how everything began, she explained that he first obtained her account details in an innocent manner. During their initial meeting, she had faced a payment issue at a restaurant, and he had stepped in to cover her bill. Later, when they went out again, the bank network failed on his end, so she paid the bill. He then asked for her account number to refund her, which is how he initially gained access to it.
She clarified that from the start, she had been upfront with him about her disinterest in dating. However, when he suggested that they could be friends instead, she agreed, thinking it was harmless. Unfortunately, his persistence later turned into an unexpected legal battle.
