On Friday, May 12, 2023, a police officer in Uganda, identified as Constable Ivan Wabwire, reportedly shot and killed an Indian moneylender named Uttam Bhandari at Raja Chambers in Uganda. According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the victim was the Director of TFS Financial Services and had been shot dead with an AK47 by the police officer.
Reports suggest that the suspect had acquired a loan from the victim's company in 2020 and had visited him to obtain a quotation for a loan transfer to an unidentified bank. However, an argument over the balance ensued between them, leading to the shooting. After the incident, the suspect fled the scene on a bicycle and later abandoned the firearm at CPS Kampala.
Onyango further disclosed that the police constable had been banned from gun possession for six years due to a medical condition and had stolen the firearm used by a fellow colleague. The incident has sparked outrage among netizens, with many expressing their concerns about police brutality and the need for justice for the victim. A video of the incident has also been shared on social media.
This happened yesterday here in Uganda. A policeman went to a loan shack and asked how much he owed and he wasn't pleased to what the Asian money lender told him. So he shot him pic.twitter.com/iub2FQj2dS
