Ayorinde AdeBello, a pastor recently suspended by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has publicly denied allegations of homosexuality that led to his suspension. This development has drawn significant attention and sparked conversations regarding the allegations and the church's response to them.
The church announced the temporary suspension of AdeBello, along with another pastor, in an RCCG memo dated October 28, 2024. The memo, which was signed by National Overseer Sunday Akande, called for an investigation into the allegations, highlighting the church’s commitment to uphold its doctrine, which strictly opposes homosexuality, citing biblical principles as its foundation. This clear stance has been reiterated in the church's communications to its congregation and the public, indicating the seriousness with which such allegations are treated.
In response to the suspension and the swirling allegations, AdeBello took to Instagram to assert his innocence, stating emphatically, “I never engaged in sodomy with male teenagers.” This statement reflects his determination to clear his name and counter the damaging claims made against him. He expressed concern that his initial silence on the matter had been misinterpreted as an admission of guilt, prompting him to clarify his position publicly.
AdeBello alleged that a viral WhatsApp screenshot being used against him was taken out of context. He explained that the conversation referenced in the screenshot pertained to discussions on male reproductive health and self-esteem within a youth group chat, rather than anything inappropriate. In his statement, he noted, “In the past few days, some allegations were made against me and some others via a blog on social media known as Gist Lover.” He indicated that the allegations escalated quickly and that he felt compelled to respond as they had become serious and damaging to his reputation.
He continued, “I had wanted to respond immediately it was brought to my attention, but I was advised not to, as I was not the only one named, and all of us may have been mentioned to drive engagement on the blog.” This insight into his decision-making process reveals the complexity and pressure faced by individuals caught in public scandals, particularly within religious communities where reputation and integrity are paramount.
As he further defended his position, he stated, “However, as these allegations have escalated to criminal claims, I am compelled to respond as my prolonged silence has been misconstrued as an admission of guilt.” He firmly asserted, “I have NEVER demanded for sex from any male as payment or gratification in order to give them assistance, platforms or positions. God is the only King Maker, the only One who can raise and erase kings, give positions and platforms.” This declaration underscores his belief in divine justice and the importance of integrity in his ministry.
Moreover, he emphasized, “I have NEVER had sex with (*******) or proposed sex to him for any reason.” He elaborated on the nature of the discussions in the screenshot, explaining, “The questions in the screenshot were asked during a conversation in a male teenagers WhatsApp group where discussions regarding Male Reproductive Health and Self Esteem took place.” AdeBello articulated that the focus of their conversation was on educating the teenagers about proper hygiene for reproductive health, appropriate choices in underwear, and affirming their self-worth, stating that “the girth and length determines the underwear size.”
In his conclusion, AdeBello expressed his dismay at the misinterpretation of the screenshot, saying, “It is disheartening to see that the screenshot message has now been mischievously quoted out of context to portray me as someone who has sex with male teenagers.” This statement reflects his frustration not only with the allegations but also with the broader implications of how social media can distort narratives and impact individuals’ lives and reputations.
