The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest and detention of one of its officers who was seen in a viral video abusing the Naira, an act widely condemned by the public.
The officer in question was reportedly captured in a video that has been circulating on social media, holding and flaunting bundles of cash for the sons of Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya. This video, which quickly gained traction online, drew significant criticism.
In a statement released on Friday, the Force’s public relations officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as unethical and contrary to the professional standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
Adejobi assured the public that the officer involved will face appropriate disciplinary measures for his conduct. He emphasized the importance of upholding ethical behavior within the Police Force to maintain public trust and respect.
However, this move by the Police did not sit well with some Nigerians, who argued that the punishment was unfairly targeted at the officer instead of addressing the actions of the rich individuals involved. Social media platforms have been flooded with mixed reactions to the incident.
Morris Monye, a concerned Nigerian, took to his social media to express his disappointment in the Nigeria Police Force. He criticized the decision to detain the officer, arguing that the punishment reflects systemic bias against the less privileged.
In his post, Monye stated, “Rich kids came online and did all sorts with the Naira, poor policeman wey stand on him own (literally doing nothing), you detain.” He concluded by lamenting the lack of fairness in the country, saying, “Poor man no get rights for this country.”
The incident has continued to spark debates across social media platforms, with many Nigerians questioning the actions of the Police and the societal imbalance in how justice is served.
