Pastor Olumide Emmanuel has boldly challenged the traditional views on submission within the context of marriage, asserting that it should not be a concept exclusively designated for women. His perspective offers a new insight into marital dynamics, particularly in Christian unions, and calls for a shift towards mutual respect and understanding between spouses.
In a recent talk, Pastor Olumide emphasized that Christian marriages should adhere to kingdom principles that go beyond cultural norms and expectations. He argued that the common belief that only women should submit is not in line with the teachings of the Bible, and instead, submission should be seen as a mutual process between both husband and wife.
Speaking to his audience, he urged men to show respect for their wives’ perspectives and to recognize the wisdom and value that women bring to a relationship. He made it clear that submission is not a one-sided obligation but rather a mutual process where both partners are equally involved in decision-making and nurturing the marriage. He explained, "Men, I will tell you for free, respect a woman’s sensitivity if you want to do well in life. Ask any married man that will be honest with you—there are things that if we did not listen to our wives, we’d be in trouble by now. And there are times we didn’t listen, and we entered trouble.”
Pastor Emmanuel went on to criticize the culturally ingrained mindset that positions men as the sole decision-makers in the household. He cautioned younger individuals not to adopt such outdated attitudes, urging them to embrace a more balanced and respectful approach to marriage.
“Don’t let Africa kill you with the ‘I’m a man of this house’ mentality. Marriage is not an African culture—it’s a kingdom culture. The Bible says, ‘submitting yourselves one to another.’ Mutual submission is a kingdom agenda for marriage. So, there are times you need to submit to your wife,” he added.
The pastor’s message has sparked conversations about the evolving dynamics of marital roles and the importance of mutual respect and humility in relationships.
