A former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe, has made a bold statement, declaring that he will never again support the former Anambra State governor. Okupe expressed his discontent, claiming that Obi is publicly undermining prominent Yorubas who showed him support during the election.

In recent comments, Okupe addressed the backlash he has received from those criticizing his support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan. He described the attacks as rooted in ignorance, highlighting the need for understanding the complexities surrounding the situation before passing judgment.

He emphasized that criticism without a clear understanding only serves to hinder constructive dialogue and diminishes the potential for positive change in the political landscape. Okupe, who has previously served as a Presidential Spokesperson, made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Monday.

Reflecting on his political journey, Okupe revealed that prior to the 2023 general election, he was aligned with Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State. He recounted a conversation with Baba Adebanjo, who emphasized the necessity of having a Southern President and questioned which zone it should come from. Okupe stated, “And I said South East. Let’s support them.”

However, he expressed his disappointment, stating, “And all eminent Yoruba people supported you, why now bring us down publicly? It’s wrong.” His comments underscore a growing rift in the political landscape and reflect the complexities of regional and ethnic dynamics within Nigerian politics. Okupe’s decision to withdraw support from Obi highlights a significant shift in allegiance among political figures, emphasizing the importance of unity and respect among party members and supporters.
