One Nigerian woman has taken to social media to express her distress over the state of her life since relocating to the United Kingdom. In a video shared online, the woman revealed that she used to run a thriving business in Nigeria before deciding to migrate abroad.
But, things haven't gone as planned for her in the UK. She now finds herself working as a carer, a job that involves looking after elderly people and cleaning their feces in order to make ends meet. In a video collage she posted online, the woman can be seen crying at work while juxtaposed with pictures of her former life in Nigeria. The caption on the post read, "CEO in Naija is now cleaning nyash uk 😭😭."
The video has sparked mixed reactions online, with some netizens asserting that the woman was overreacting since her UK job pays well. One @benitaawoh wrote, "There is dignity in labour. Take pride in what your hands have found to do. Retrain, acquire new skills and pursue your dream (whatever it is)." Another netizen, @_kingnaz, remarked, "Lol caring for old people soft compared to warehouse work. You fit even dey jist with them."
Others empathized with the woman's situation, with one user, @og_bella, stating, "There’s nothing bad in it, it’s a job and gradually you’ll get to where you want to be." Another user, @esentiaxperience, pointed out that the woman could be earning a good income from her job, writing, "But she will be making 2000-3000 pounds even more depending on how many hours she works and the area, which is 1.1 to 1.6 million naira per month. How many professionals, bankers, doctors, so-called 'CEO' in Nigeria can boast of that kind of monthly take-home?"
The emotional video has drawn attention to the challenges that many migrants face when trying to make a new life for themselves in a foreign country, and has also sparked discussions about the value of hard work and the importance of pursuing one's dreams, no matter how difficult the circumstances may be.
