A Nigerian Dentist named Dr. Oluwatomisin Oso recently expressed his frustration towards UK-based Nigerians who constantly complain about their standard of living in the UK on social media. In a series of tweets posted on Twitter, he criticized those who expect their lives to change overnight and discourage others from coming to the UK because they did not experience the rapid change they expected.
Dr. Oso emphasized that it is unfair to expect sympathy from people who do not have the basic amenities that they are enjoying abroad because they cannot be patient. He questioned those who complain about not having 20 thousand pounds in their bank account after only 12 months of living in the UK and asked what happened to patience. He pointed out that the things they left in Nigeria took longer than a year to build, so why do they expect their lives to suddenly transform within a year of traveling?
He also highlighted that UK-based Nigerians often forget the struggles they faced in Nigeria, such as spending hours on the road going to work or being called in to do overtime without extra pay. Dr. Oso mentioned that they complain about working too much, but they forget to mention that they get paid for every extra minute they spend at work in the UK.
Dr. Oso urged UK-based Nigerians to be grateful for the progress they have made and to remember why they left Nigeria in the first place. He reminded them of the constant power supply, superb internet connection, and access to a variety of food without breaking the bank. He encouraged them to form a community and lament amongst themselves instead of looking for sympathy from people back home who are still struggling with the basic amenities.
