[p]A Nigerian pilot, Captain Arinze Odira Onyiliofor, who is based abroad, has expressed his dismay at the high cost of daycare for his under-5 years old daughter. According to Captain Onyiliofor, he has been slammed with a monthly fee of $1950, which is equivalent to about N1.3 million, for his daughter's daycare in a Western country. He took to his Twitter page to bemoan the high cost and suggested the alternative of home-schooling his daughter until she is above 5 years old with the help of his mother, who is a retired teacher.
[/p][p]Captain Onyiliofor wrote on Twitter: "My daughter's daycare tuition is going to be $1950 per month. I've just instructed my mum, her grandmother, to pack her bags and get ready to travel. She was a teacher before retiring. She is about to come out of retirement. My daughter should get ready to be home-schooled till she is 5. I didn't kill my parents. My daughter is not going to kill me."
[/p][p]Following his tweet, netizens chipped in to share their own experiences and opinions on the matter. Many Nigerians expressed their shock at the high cost of daycare in the Western country, with some describing it as exorbitant. One Twitter user, @NNlewoha, wrote: "You people that still have mums are enjoying. We currently pay $42 a day for my son's daycare, no other option. Na pay and cry 😠we dey do biweekly when the deduction happens."
[/p][p]Another user, @dogzigee, shared their experience of hiring an after-school nanny for their two children, which cost $2000 per month. They eventually asked their mother-in-law, who is a retired English PhD, to help with the kids, and described it as the best decision they ever made as working parents in the USA.
[/p][p]However, some users suggested that the cost of daycare is normal and that it is just the beginning of the expenses that come with raising a child in the Western country. One user, @jerrybest7, stated: "Bro that's normal na... That ain't no big thing.. That's just daycare moving on of that to private Christian school where you have to pay $12,000 per year. God bless you that you have 2-4 kids. The list goes on and on... why you think say men get bald so fast 🙈🙈🙈."
[/p][p]Meanwhile, another user, @RadicalYouthMan, called out Captain Onyiliofor for suggesting that his mother should help with his daughter's homeschooling without payment. They wrote: "Pay mum 500$ per month.. Person carry this your big head for 9 months, you want make she come look after your pikin ... See if you don't pay her, I will report you to Child support .. abi what do you guys call them in America?"
[/p][p]In conclusion, the high cost of daycare in Western countries is a major concern for many parents, especially those who are based abroad. While some have found alternatives such as home-schooling or asking for help from family members, others continue to struggle with the financial burden that comes with raising children in the West.
