The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the February 25 general election, Mr Peter Obi has expressed his belief that Nigeria lacks selfless leaders who are dedicated to the national interest, sustainable development, and innovative thinking. According to Obi, these qualities are essential to provide every Nigerian with the freedom to choose their place of residence, protection of lives and property, and a society that upholds ordered liberties.
On the occasion of Nigeria's Democracy Day, Obi took to his official Twitter page to join other stakeholders in celebrating the event. However, he also lamented the current state of affairs in the country, where foundational pillars of democracy are being undermined by impunity, pervasive violence, and bloodshed.
Obi acknowledged the significance of June 12 as a day that symbolizes Nigeria's collective journey to nationhood and true democracy, highlighting the recognition of late Chief M. K.O Abiola as a worthy leader by Nigerians and governments worldwide. Nonetheless, he expressed concerns about the present state of politics in Nigeria, emphasizing the deep troubles faced by democracy and the uncertain and precarious nature of the nation's destiny.
In his statement, Obi stressed the importance of respecting and protecting the institutions of the democratic state, fulfilling the responsibilities of governance, and upholding the rule of law. He voiced his disappointment with the current trust deficit between leaders and citizens, citing the deficits of trust and efficiency in recent elections as evidence of this malady. Obi urged for corrective measures to restore confidence in Nigeria's future and true democracy, while reminding everyone not to lose faith in the inherent capacity of the democratic system to self-correct.
Personally, Obi remained committed and optimistic about the possibility of a New Nigeria, one characterized by equity, justice, security, and peace. He emphasized the need for selfless leaders who prioritize the national interest, sustainable development, and innovative thinking. Obi believed that these aspirations are attainable and reiterated his promise to Nigerians that he would persist in the fight to bring about a leadership that accords them the priority they deserve.
