A Nigerian man has shared a painful story about his efforts to help a young boy gain an education, only for the boy’s mother to instruct him not to inform the man about the boy's admission to study Civil Engineering at the University of Ilorin.
The man recounted the incident in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), explaining how he had recently paid the boy’s WAEC and JAMB fees, in the hopes of giving him a better future. However, when the boy received his admission to Unilorin, his mother allegedly told him not to share the news with the man who had helped him. Despite the mother’s instruction, the boy defied her and informed the man about the good news.
The man was overjoyed to hear the boy’s news and, wanting to help further, sent money to assist the boy with food and settling in at school. However, when the boy’s mother discovered that he had shared the information, she allegedly punished him for doing so. This revelation left the man deeply hurt, as he reflected on the boy’s past struggles and how far he had come thanks to the support he had provided.
The man expressed his frustration, stating: “The boy I paid for his WAEC and JAMB fees got admission to study Civil Engineering at Unilorin. His mum told him not to tell me, but the boy insisted and told me.” He continued, “The mum found out because I sent the boy money for foodstuff and settling in. She beat him. This is a boy who didn’t want to go to school three years ago. He used to live in a betting shop, playing virtual games and begging for handouts. I put him where he could learn barbing, and now he’s in school. Yesterday, I found out that his mother beat him for telling me. It hurts.”
The man also shared his frustration about the fact that other relatives who helped with the boy’s university fees were also unaware of his achievements. He questioned, “All the uncles who helped with his university fees don’t even know about his journey. What am I supposed to do? Turn something joyful into nonsense. Still, I’m happy for the boy.”
As the post went viral online, many social media users flooded the comments section to share their thoughts and reactions to the man’s experience.
See some reactions below:
@michaelfasina: “Is it that the woman did not want him to bother you with further responsibilities or just busy body?”
@im_tolumichael: “Unfortunately, this is the mindset of most people. They believe every help you render without requesting for anything in return, is questionable and suspicious. You’re trying to change their story for better, meanwhile they’re seeing you as the villain in their story.”
