A man identified as Deobra Redden has been sentenced to a lengthy 26 years in prison after he attacked a judge in Clark County District Court, in an incident that shocked many. The 31-year-old man was caught on video in a violent outburst, leaping over a courtroom bench and desk before attacking Judge Mary Kay Holthus, a 62-year-old veteran of the judiciary, on Tuesday during a tense moment in the courtroom.
The shocking attack occurred just moments before Judge Holthus was about to deliver Redden’s sentence in a separate felony battery case. Redden, who was facing charges related to the battery case, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in September to attempted murder and other charges, acknowledging the severity of his actions. The attack came as a terrifying surprise, with Judge Holthus recounting how she feared for her life as Redden leaped over her 4-foot-high bench and landed on her, catching her completely off guard.
In a testimony given during the case, Judge Holthus explained the intense fear she experienced, as the situation escalated quickly and put her in immediate danger. Redden’s actions were aggressive, and the judge’s swift response to this trauma highlighted the terrifying nature of the attack. Redden's guilty plea and mental illness plea ultimately led to his 26-year sentence, a decision that brought a sense of justice and relief to the courtroom. The case serves as a reminder of the risks and pressures faced by judges and law enforcement officers during courtroom proceedings.
