A Nigerian man has ignited widespread criticism after suggesting that men should prioritize investing in their girlfriends over their mothers.
In a video posted on TikTok, the man, known by his handle @o_powersolution3, sparked intense reactions by emphasizing how his girlfriend has been more beneficial to his financial success than his mother. He explained that despite his love for his mother, he believes investing in his girlfriend has been a more profitable decision for his business ventures.
In the 4-minute video, @o_powersolution3 stated that his experience has shown that leaving his girlfriend in charge of his business operations while he is away has proven to be more lucrative than relying on his mother’s support.
He went on to argue that investing in one's girlfriend was a wiser choice than spending money on one’s mother, claiming, “Your father is the reason why your family is poor. The best thing your mother can offer you in times of struggles is emotions. Asides that, nothing else again.”
The controversial statement created a stir as the man contended that financial struggles in many families stem from poor decisions made by fathers. He encouraged breaking away from the financial expectations placed on individuals by their parents in order to avoid perpetuating poverty within the family unit. He added:
“You will think because I am talking like this, I don’t love my mother. I love my mother, but I still love my wife and my girlfriend more than my mother. Simply because she’s just my mother. My father is her husband, I’m not.”
While his intention was to emphasize the importance of building strong, successful partnerships outside the family, his remarks were met with fierce backlash. Many critics accused him of devaluing the unconditional love, sacrifices, and lifelong contributions mothers make in the lives of their children. The video’s comment section became flooded with criticisms, with viewers labeling his opinions as “misguided,” “insensitive,” and “disrespectful” toward mothers everywhere.
In response to the backlash, @o_powersolution3 issued a clarification, explaining that his words were not meant to undermine his love for his mother but rather to highlight the necessity of fostering relationships beyond the family for financial growth and independence. He insisted that his comments were misconstrued and urged people not to take his words out of context.
Despite the clarification, the video has continued to generate intense debate across social media platforms, with many questioning societal norms and values surrounding the roles of parents, family, and romantic partners in the pursuit of success. The debate surrounding the video continues to polarize audiences, sparking discussions about the expectations of familial duty, love, and personal financial growth.
