A man, identified as Obinna Nwigwe, has been arrested by men of the FCT Police Command, for shooting his friend in Abuja under shocking circumstances. The incident occurred during a heated exchange between the two at Najob Guest House in Bwari.
This was disclosed in a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Tuesday, providing details about the disturbing event. According to Adeh, the suspect, a 33-year-old man, had shot his 29-year-old friend, Andrew Philemon, after an argument escalated violently on December 26, 2024.
The FCT Police statement described the crime as deeply troubling, highlighting the violent nature of the shooting. According to Adeh, the police received an emergency distress call reporting gunfire at the guest house. Upon arrival, officers found Philemon critically injured, having sustained a gunshot wound, and immediately began their investigation into the incident.
The investigation revealed that Nwigwe, who was in possession of a pump-action rifle at the time of the incident, claimed that he had shot Philemon in self-defense, asserting that the argument between the two had become violent, prompting him to protect himself. However, the police quickly responded to the distress call and arrested Nwigwe at the scene of the crime, securing him for further questioning.
The police also conducted a search of Nwigwe’s residence, which led to the discovery of an alarming arsenal of weapons. The authorities have indicated that additional investigations are underway regarding the source and legality of the weapons found at his home.
SP Josephine Adeh expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it a stark reminder of the dangers of unresolved conflicts escalating into violence. She reassured the public that the police would continue to take swift action in such cases and would ensure justice is served for the victim, Philemon, who remains in critical condition as he receives medical treatment.
