A Nigerian man has recently sparked a significant online conversation by submitting an application to Guinness World Records, requesting that Nigeria be officially recognized for holding the record of the most national grid collapses in a single year.
This bold application comes in the wake of the persistent power grid failures that have plagued the country for years, with the issue becoming even more pressing this year. The national grid in Nigeria has experienced an unprecedented number of collapses, contributing to widespread power outages and leaving many Nigerians frustrated with the situation.
Man seeks Guinness World Record for most national grid collapse.
Taking to the popular social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the man shared an open letter addressed to Guinness World Records, requesting that they officially acknowledge Nigeria's national grid crisis. In the letter, he outlined the staggering number of grid collapses that have occurred in 2024, noting that, as of that time, Nigeria's national grid had collapsed 11 times, with the possibility of reaching 12 collapses within the next two days. He emphasized that the frequency of these collapses—an approximate 90% chance of failure every two days—sets a global precedent for grid instability, making this statistic deserving of official recognition. He further pointed out that Nigeria is the only country to have established a committee specifically to address national grid collapses, and that each collapse is publicly documented on the official National Grid account on X, making this phenomenon even more unique and noteworthy.
In the letter, he added, “As a proud Nigerian and applicant for this record, I respectfully request the exclusive right to receive this recognition on behalf of the country. This honor can remain with me until another Nigerian applies in the future, as the grid’s instability is almost a sure bet.” His humorous yet serious tone resonated with many Nigerians, who have long been accustomed to the power failures that seem to be an almost guaranteed part of life in the country.
The man, who identified himself as "General Snow," closed his message by thanking Guinness World Records for considering his application and expressing anticipation for their response. He ended his letter with a hopeful “Sincerely, General Snow,” before posting it for the world to see.
The post quickly went viral, with thousands of people engaging with the content and sharing their thoughts on the situation. Some expressed support for the man’s application, acknowledging the severity of the national grid’s failures, while others felt that the stunt was disrespectful to the country’s struggle with power shortages.

@pointzero_088: “As much as I do t line the power outages and strongly believe a lot more can be done to remedy the situation, it is extremely disrespectful to Nigeria to do this. We have to stop this kind of stunt, please.”
@onlyonejega: “As a Nigerian that have lived for more than 25 years, I’m in full support of mr @generalshow_ As a matter of fact to back up is claim i can say I’ve never experienced a month straight full electricity supply. Many more to say but we really deserve this award.”
