A devastating fire engulfed a rice mill in Ega-Idah, the administrative hub of Idah Local Government Area, Kogi State, during the early hours of Thursday. The fire, which caused significant damage, occurred around 3:00 a.m. and was preceded by a loud explosion that shook the surrounding area. The explosion was reportedly so powerful that it was heard from a distance, and it rapidly escalated into a fire that consumed the entire mill.
The rice mill was a vital resource for local farmers and rice traders, especially in Idah and the nearby Ibaji communities. It was established as a joint venture by two friends, the late Muhammed and Amodu, and had become a key component in the region’s rice production industry. The loss of the mill is seen as a major blow to the local economy, especially since it was a key player during the harvest and festive seasons when demand for rice is at its peak.
According to a security guard on duty at the time of the incident, he recalled hearing a sound similar to the striking of a matchstick, followed by a spark and an explosion. The explosion triggered the rapid spread of the fire, which quickly engulfed the mill. Unfortunately, due to the lack of electricity in the area at the time, efforts to investigate the incident were hindered, and no suspects have been identified.
Musa, a rice merchant from Idah, expressed his frustration and concern, explaining to Daily Trust that the incident had occurred during the peak season for the rice business, making it even more devastating for the local community. "This is the peak season for our business, and this incident is a major setback," Musa said, emphasizing that the loss of the rice mill, which was valued at over ₦200 million, would have severe repercussions on the economy of Idah and the surrounding areas.
Local authorities, including the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Aya, were contacted for comments on the incident, but attempts to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone line remained unreachable. As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, which has shaken the local rice industry and disrupted the livelihoods of many people who relied on the mill’s operations.
