The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially donated the sum of ₦30 million to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the legendary designer of Nigeria’s National Flag. This gesture comes nearly two years after his passing, fulfilling a promise made by the government to honor his contributions to the nation.
ÂThe cheque presentation took place at the late hero’s residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday. It was delivered by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was accompanied by the Oyo State Director of the agency, Olukemi Afolayan.
ÂAccording to reports from PUNCH Online, Taiwo Akinkunmi passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87. Following his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took steps to recognize his legacy by sending a high-level government delegation to sympathize with his family.

On September 4, 2023, a delegation led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, paid a condolence visit to Akinkunmi’s family. During the visit, the government pledged both financial support and a befitting national burial in honor of the late patriot’s service to Nigeria.
ÂSpeaking at the cheque presentation, the NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, emphasized that the ₦30 million donation was not a form of payment for the late designer’s work but rather a token of appreciation from the government to assist his family in recognition of his immense contributions to the country.
ÂIn response to the government’s gesture, one of Akinkunmi’s sons, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and his administration for fulfilling their promise and providing financial support to their family during this period.
