A Nigerian father has taken to social media to seek advice after making a surprising discovery in his young child's school bag.
The concerned father, whose child is just 8 years old and still in a basic class, found a handwritten love letter addressed to a classmate. Unsure of how to respond, he anonymously reached out to a popular social security influencer on X (formerly Twitter) for guidance on how to handle the situation appropriately.
According to the father, his wife was the first to notice the letter and brought it to his attention. The note contained affectionate expressions that seemed too mature for a child of that age, leaving the parents uncertain about how to approach the matter.
In his plea for advice, the father wrote:
“Agba, good morning. I came home last night, and my wife told me she found this in my son’s school bag. I don’t even know how to handle it. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated. He will be 8 years old in May.”
“I don’t know if I should scold him, talk to him, or scare him. I just need something that will stick with him as he grows. Please help, sir.”
The letter found in the child's bag read:
“Hello pretty, you’re truly the one for me. My day would not be complete without you. You’re my smile, my tears, my laughter—my heart, my soul, my love.”
“You’re my everything. I never want to be without you. I want to grow old with you. I love you so much. Reply back.”
“From your friend, Ayo. Thanks for reading. I like you. Do you like me? Yes or No?”
The father’s post quickly gained traction on X, drawing a flood of reactions from netizens. Some shared their childhood experiences with similar situations, while others offered various suggestions on how he should handle it.
Some of the top reactions included:
@MorningAlinda: “Our P.2 teacher warned us that writing love letters to our fellows causes AIDS🤣🤣🤣🤣 and we all grew up with fear until we learned about the real causes of AIDS in P.6. It was a way of keeping us from the drama of love letters.”
@AdeshinaAdedam5: “I received something like this when I was 12 (JSS2) from a friend in our neighborhood, and it made me dislike the boy somehow. Since that day, he always hid his face whenever I was around 😂 It was so embarrassing. Good morning, sir.”
@Chuks832855191: “All the bitter people won’t see this now and commend how well you handled this, though they are learning. Good morning, Agba.”
@samoblah: “The laughing part by the girl is very disastrous, something no boy wants to witness. Good morning.”
While some users found the situation amusing, others advised the father to have an open and honest conversation with his child rather than reacting harshly. Many suggested using the opportunity to educate the child on emotions, relationships, and appropriate behavior at a young age.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the father will ultimately choose to handle the situation.
