The Department of State Services (DSS) is reportedly planning to seek a court order to detain Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, for an indefinite period to facilitate thorough questioning. President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele from office on Friday, citing ongoing investigations and planned financial sector reforms. Emefiele was subsequently arrested by DSS operatives in Lagos and transported to Abuja. Despite having obtained a court order preventing his arrest, Emefiele was seen in a viral video being escorted by security agents to a waiting plane. A source from the DSS revealed plans to keep Emefiele in their custody for an extended duration, stating that additional charges may be brought against him while further investigations are conducted. The DSS has assembled a team of experienced interrogators to question Emefiele on various matters, including alleged terrorism financing and accusations of economic mismanagement within the apex bank. The source emphasized the importance of tying up loose ends before proceeding to court and expressed the need for Nigerians to understand the circumstances surrounding Emefiele's previous evasion.
