A lady simply identified as Dodo has sparked a heated debate on social media after sharing her opinion on addressing a friend’s boyfriend as “uncle.”
Taking to her X page, Dodo argued that calling a friend’s boyfriend “uncle” out of respect is an outdated and local practice that should be discouraged.
She wrote, “Calling your friend’s boyfriend ‘Uncle (his name)’ because she asked you to or you’re trying to be ‘respectful’ is actually just too local mehn.”
Her statement quickly gained traction, sparking discussions among social media users who shared their perspectives on how a friend’s boyfriend should be addressed.
Some users agreed with her, stating that there are better ways to show respect without using the term “uncle,” while others insisted that addressing a friend’s older boyfriend with a title is a sign of respect, especially in African culture.
@mustapha_aishah said, “I can only say Mr …. Or call his nickname. Uncle ko.”
@AdemidunAkintu1 wrote, “Why should you address your friend’s man by his first name when he’s not dating you? I understand if he’s a college guy and the same age as you guys, but if not, it’s a NO for me. Everyone deserves respect. He’s dating your friend, not you. If you won’t respect him, make everyone face their lane.”
@Jollz commented, “I can’t do it oh. Even if he’s much older, he is now our mate, abeg.”
@onesidedimplee shared, “My friend once dated a man eight years older than us, and by the special grace of God, we all called him by his name 😂. We were quite cordial sef.”
The debate continues to generate buzz as more social media users weigh in on the discussion, sharing their experiences and cultural perspectives.
