Anja Ringgren Lovén, a Danish aid worker, has shared the remarkable transformation of a young girl named Charity who was abandoned by her family and community in Akwa Ibom over claims of being a witch. In 2013, Anja rescued Charity from an abandoned house where she had been living, malnourished, beaten, and abused. She recently took to Facebook to share how after 10 years, Charity has become a strong and independent young woman who is about to start university. Anja emphasized that Charity's development and accomplishments are all thanks to the amazing love and support from people. On the anniversary of Charity's rescue, Anja and Charity dressed up to celebrate the progress she has made over the past decade.
Anja recalled how, 10 years ago, she and Land of Hope Director of Child Development Nsidibe Orok found Charity in an abandoned house, where she begged for food during the day and slept on the dirty ground at night. She was wearing a Chelsea football jersey that was many sizes too big for her, and her body was severely malnourished. Anja emphasized that while what happened to Charity during those years of struggle and immense pain belongs to the past, her progress and accomplishments are a testament to her strength and resilience.
