The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a directive to Hudu Yunusa, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Adamawa State, to stay away from the state office. This directive was contained in a letter dated April 17, 2023, and addressed to the Adamawa State REC by the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony. The letter stated that the administrative secretary has been instructed to take full charge of INEC in Adamawa State with immediate effect. The reason for the directive was not specified in the letter.

However, it should be noted that the directive was issued after the controversial declaration of Aishatu Dahiru Binani, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Adamawa state governorship election by the REC on Sunday morning, April 16. The results collation process was not completed before the declaration was made. The decision by the REC has been widely criticized, and it is unclear if it is related to the directive issued by INEC.
