A Nigerian civil servant is now filled with deep regret after borrowing ₦2.3 million to fund a lavish wedding that was heavily influenced by his wife’s desire for an extravagant celebration.
In a post by X user @rukky_nate, the man revealed that he spent a staggering ₦6 million on the wedding but was only able to recover ₦350,000 from cash gifts received at the event. The civil servant disclosed that the decision to go all out on the wedding came at the request of his wife, who insisted on having a “loud” celebration. The man, now regretting his choice, had to borrow the additional ₦2.3 million from his workplace’s cooperative society to cover the costs.
The user shared his thoughts, writing, “My neighbor’s brother, a civil servant, got married over the weekend, he spent N6m on expenses. He was only able to realize 350k from the total money sprayed. He said his wife wanted a loud wedding, and he agreed, now he is regretting that decision. I don’t feel sorry for him.”
In another post, he added, “Update: He borrowed N2.3m from his workplace cooperative society. This is stupidity, I feel like punching this guy in the face.”
The post has since sparked mixed reactions across social media. While some criticized the man for making such a financial decision to please his wife, others pointed out the pressures that societal expectations and family influence can have on couples in making such choices. Many also argued that the incident highlights the growing financial burdens associated with weddings in Nigeria and the urgent need for couples to prioritize financial stability over social grandeur.
The debate surrounding extravagant weddings and their financial implications has gained considerable attention, as many Nigerians are reevaluating their approach to marriage celebrations, with an increasing call for sensible spending amidst tough economic conditions.
