24-year-old landlord demands tenants follow his Instagram and YouTube before making repairs

A tenant has taken to social media to share a bizarre experience regarding his 24-year-old landlord, who has adopted an unusual policy when it comes to addressing maintenance issues in the building. According to the tenant, the young landlord refuses to fix any problems within the property unless tenants subscribe to his YouTube channel and follow him on Instagram.

The tenant explained that whenever anyone complains about faulty amenities—such as a leaking roof or a broken water pump—the landlord’s response is always the same: he demands that they engage with his social media pages before he takes any action. This unconventional approach has left many tenants frustrated, as essential repairs are being delayed over social media engagement.

“My landlord is 24 years old. If you reach out to him with a complaint about your apartment—say, a leaking roof—he’ll tell you to follow him on Instagram and subscribe to his YouTube channel before he does anything,” the tenant revealed in his viral post.

In another shocking incident, the tenant recounted how the landlord abruptly left a WhatsApp group chat meant for tenants. He had been added to the group so he could see how residents were organizing contributions to buy diesel for the water pump, but within five minutes, he exited. The reason? A tenant had responded to one of his messages with “???”—which the landlord allegedly found disrespectful.

Ironically, according to the tenant, the landlord himself frequently uses “???” in conversations, even when communicating with his lawyer. This contradiction has further fueled frustration among the tenants, who feel that their landlord’s actions are immature and unprofessional.

The tenant went on to criticize the landlord’s approach to property management, revealing that the landlord had recently instructed his lawyer to increase their rent by 35%. This drastic hike reportedly came after the landlord’s own rent in Lekki increased from ₦5 million to ₦7 million. The tenant questioned whether such a person could be trusted to handle necessary repairs, emphasizing that none of the tenants had ever even seen the landlord in person.

“That’s the same person you expect to fix things? Someone we’ve never even seen in person?” he wrote, expressing his frustration.

As the story gained traction online, social media users flooded the comments section, sharing their thoughts on the unusual situation. Many found the landlord’s approach amusing, while others saw it as a sign of the changing times, where social media influence plays a role even in property management.

See some reactions below:

@Arhcent: “That type of landlord has the potential to call you out with a thread on X if you are late on rent. New fear unlocked.”

@ndictmedia: “Your landlord is a tech guy already, he has monetized everything, so do as he said before he does anything, yeah.”

@iamtoch1: “Instead of trying to find fault with him, why not ask him for advice on how he achieved success at a young age? A 24-year-old landlord is pretty impressive.”

@EMZO_001: “That’s actually funny. He’s a tech-oriented person with a mild touch of Gen Z. Imagine he sends police after you because you refused to follow him on IG.”

@kalyxmoses: “And yet you are not sharing his accounts here for a discount on rent. Do we have to teach you everything?”

@AimThaMachine_: “If he does everything after y’all follow him on Instagram and subscribe to his YouTube, then I do not see any issue here. That’s a proactive young man. Let him flex, and y’all must be part of his story.”

@stephenaaay: “Ask to strike a deal. You get him a hundred subscribers and a hundred followers, and you pay only half rent.”
