A heartbreaking tragedy has been reported at Red Hill Baraka School, where a 10-year-old boy, Shawn Victor Were, tragically passed away after collapsing during a punishment session. The distressing incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice from concerned citizens.
The shocking news first surfaced on a popular social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), where a detailed account was shared, shedding light on the devastating events that led to Shawn’s untimely demise.
According to the viral post by @omondike_, Shawn’s mother received a call from the school at exactly 2:48 p.m., informing her that her son was feeling unwell and speaking incoherently. Alarmed by the call, she immediately contacted the school director to ask why her son had not been rushed to a hospital. However, the director shockingly claimed that there was no available vehicle to transport him.
With growing concern, Shawn’s parents, along with a neighbor, rushed to the school premises, only to find their son lying on a mattress, surrounded by teachers. Shockingly, none of the teachers could provide a coherent explanation for what had happened or why his condition had deteriorated so drastically.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Shawn’s family quickly transported him to Life-Care Hospital in Kikuyu, where doctors battled to save his life. However, their efforts were hindered by faulty oxygen equipment, delaying critical medical intervention. Despite their best attempts to resuscitate him, Shawn was tragically declared dead.
During the resuscitation process, doctors observed Shawn vomiting undigested food, which included rice and watermelon that had not been properly chewed. This raised serious concerns about the circumstances leading to his death.
Upon questioning, Shawn’s mother called the school to ask whether he had been given any food. Initially, a teacher denied feeding him. However, another teacher later admitted to giving him watermelon in an attempt to revive him after his collapse.
Further investigation into the tragic events revealed that Shawn had been unfairly punished earlier in the day. While his class was scheduled for a swimming lesson, he and a few other students were made to stay back in the classroom since their parents had opted out of the activity.
Shawn was assigned the role of monitoring his classmates. However, when the teacher returned and discovered noise in the classroom, Shawn and five other students were singled out for punishment, despite Shawn pleading his innocence and even presenting a list of the actual noisemakers. His pleas were ignored, and he was ordered to run a cross-country track as punishment.
While running, Shawn reportedly collapsed and began convulsing. Other students who witnessed the incident later informed his twin sister, Vicky, that he had been left behind, convulsing on the ground with foam coming from his mouth. Eventually, two teachers carried him back to the school premises, but instead of seeking immediate medical attention, they allegedly fed him watermelon, which worsened his condition.
When Shawn’s parents confronted the school about the food found in his system, they were met with initial denials. However, it was evident that he had been force-fed rice and watermelon while in the middle of a medical emergency, leading to choking and further complications.
Upon further inquiry, the doctor informed Shawn’s father that his son had suffered a convulsion, and due to the force-feeding, he had choked, blocking his airway. The lack of proper medical attention and failure to act swiftly ultimately cost him his life.
Adding to the family’s anguish, the school’s response to Shawn’s passing was disturbingly indifferent. Despite earlier claiming that no vehicle was available to transport him to the hospital, the school later sent a van full of teachers to the hospital after learning of his death.
Instead of offering condolences, one teacher reportedly made an insensitive remark to Shawn’s grieving mother, stating, “It is done, Mama Shawn,” before inquiring about arrangements to transport his body to the morgue. Outraged by this callous response, Shawn’s family refused the school’s offer to transport his remains.
