The decision comes as Union find themselves in an tense battle to maintain their top-flight status.

According to Get Football Germany, Marco Grote, the club’s under-19 head coach, will take charge for the remainder of the season.

Grote had previously assumed interim role earlier in the season following former coach Urs Fischer’s departure.

Despite receiving initial backing from Union president Dirk Zingler following a recent loss to Bochum, the club’s position in the league standings prompted the sack.

With fixtures against Köln and SC Freiburg remaining, Union Berlin see the upcoming match against Köln as crucial in their bid to avoid relegation.

Bjelica, who was set to depart at the end of the season, faced challenges in filling Fischer’s shoes mid-season.

Potential replacements for the managerial position at the end of the season include former Mainz head coach Bo Svensson.
