Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has suffered a loss of $10,000 after placing a bet on City’s UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
Before the highly anticipated match at the Etihad Stadium, Aguero confidently revealed his bet, predicting that at least two goals would be scored in the first half of the game.
However, despite Erling Haaland giving City an early lead, his goal remained the only one in the first half, leaving Aguero’s wager unsuccessful and costing him a significant sum.
The 36-year-old former striker, who holds legendary status at the club after scoring 260 goals in 390 appearances, had also made a bold and outrageous statement ahead of the match during an appearance on the Som I Serem FCB Podcast:
“Real Madrid cannot beat Man City. If they do, I will cut off my testicles.”
His former City teammate, Daniel Sturridge, was left in shock at Aguero’s overconfidence, responding with humor by saying:
“I’m sceptical of that spectacle. It doesn’t sound good to me!”
During the match, Manchester City seemed to be heading toward an important victory when Erling Haaland scored his second goal, making it 2-1 in favor of the home side.
However, Real Madrid showed resilience and mounted a dramatic comeback, with Brahim Diaz equalizing for the Spanish giants before Jude Bellingham stunned the home crowd with a stoppage-time winner to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory for Los Blancos.
While Aguero’s failed bet resulted in personal disappointment, the consequences are even greater for Manchester City, as they now face an uphill battle to keep their Champions League hopes alive. The second-leg clash at the Santiago Bernabéu on February 19 will be a decisive test for Pep Guardiola’s side as they seek redemption against the Spanish powerhouse.
