The Super Eagles found themselves trailing early in the game after Benin’s Mohamed Tijani scored in the 16th minute, putting the Nigerian team on the back foot. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Nigeria was unable to break down Benin's defense in the first half, leaving them with a goal deficit going into the second period.

The Super Eagles came out more determined in the second half, and their persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Victor Osimhen rose to meet a brilliant cross from Moses Simon. Osimhen’s header found the back of the net, securing an important equalizer for Nigeria. The goal not only leveled the score but also ensured that Nigeria maintained their unbeaten streak in the qualifiers, which is crucial for their momentum as they head towards the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2025.

With the 1-1 draw, the Super Eagles remain at the top of Group A with 11 points from five games. Their tally includes three wins and two draws, keeping them in a strong position as they continue their qualification campaign. Despite the draw, the Super Eagles were already guaranteed a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before the match ended, as Rwanda’s 1-0 loss to Libya earlier in the day sealed Nigeria’s qualification. This means that Nigeria’s focus can now shift to preparing for the continental competition, with a solid spot secured in the tournament.
