Arsenal’s January transfer plans have taken a dramatic shift due to injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri, who have been instrumental in their impressive Premier League campaign so far.
As the Gunners aim to keep pace with Liverpool in the fiercely contested title race, the urgency to secure reinforcements in the winter transfer window has become a priority for manager Mikel Arteta and his team. The setbacks have prompted Arsenal to reassess their strategy to maintain their title momentum.
Initially, Arsenal’s focus was on strengthening the left wing. The objective was to acquire a world-class player to complement Bukayo Saka’s dominance on the right wing. However, with Saka now ruled out until mid-March following hamstring surgery, the club’s attention has shifted to broader attacking options to fill the void.
While Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have provided valuable contributions this season, their combined tally of 10 goals and five assists pales in comparison to Saka’s remarkable record of nine goals and 13 assists. This disparity has highlighted the urgent need for Arsenal to bring in attacking reinforcements who can match Saka’s impact on the pitch.
Additionally, Arsenal’s need for a prolific striker has grown more evident. Although Gabriel Jesus has shown signs of resurgence and Kai Havertz has delivered steady performances, Arteta has indicated that the inclusion of a consistent and high-scoring No. 9 could significantly bolster their title ambitions.
Among the top targets for Arsenal is Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams. The 22-year-old versatile winger has been a standout performer in La Liga and comes with a release clause of £48 million. His technical skills, pace, and adaptability make him a desirable addition to Arsenal’s squad. However, competition from Barcelona and the player’s loyalty to Bilbao could pose challenges in securing his signature.
Another potential option is Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, who has drawn attention for his impressive displays. However, Newcastle’s valuation of the striker at £150 million is likely beyond Arsenal’s budget for the winter window, making the deal less feasible.
In addition to Williams and Isak, Arsenal has shortlisted other alternatives, including Ademola Lookman from Atalanta and Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon. Both players have been in excellent form this season but come with steep price tags ranging from £50 to £80 million. The high valuations could make negotiations complex, especially given Arsenal’s need to address multiple areas in their squad.
