Manchester United suffered their heaviest defeat in 90 years after being soundly beaten 7-0 by Liverpool on March 5th. The defeat marks the worst for Manchester United since their loss to Middlesbrough on Boxing Day in 1931.
The match saw Gakpo put Liverpool ahead just before half-time with a well-placed shot that beat Manchester United's goalkeeper, David de Gea. At the start of the second half, Manchester United needed a response, but instead, Darwin Nunez scored a scrappy second for Liverpool, effectively putting the game beyond Manchester United's reach. As the visitors tried to mount a comeback, Liverpool added insult to injury with a third goal from Gakpo, who finished off a fluid counter-attack.
With the scoreline already a hammering, Liverpool's [ b ] Mohamed Salah scored two goals, while [ b ] Darwin Nunez added another before Roberto Firmino capped off the historic win with a seventh goal. The result marks Liverpool's biggest-ever win over Manchester United, breaking a record that had stood for over a century. The previous record was held by Liverpool's 7-1 victory over United on October 12, 1895.
In addition to the historical significance of the result, it is also the first time that Manchester United has lost by seven goals in any competition since their loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers more than 90 years ago.
Mohamed Salah's [/b] two goals in the match place him level with club legend Robbie Fowler in the record scorer list. However, he broke the record with his second goal, taking his tally to 129. Salah has now scored 11 goals across his last six appearances against Manchester United, capping off a memorable night for Liverpool.
