Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena, aged 28, tragically passed away after collapsing on the pitch during a game in Albania. The incident unfolded while Dwamena was playing for Albanian side Egnatia against Partizani on Saturday.
Dwamena reportedly collapsed in the 24th minute of the match, prompting swift attention from fellow players and medical professionals. Despite their efforts to resuscitate him, the Albania Football Federation issued a statement confirming the player’s untimely death.
The Ghana Football Association expressed its condolences, stating, “The Ghana Football Association is sad to hear of the death of our former player Raphael Dwamena and wish to express our deepest condolences to his family at this difficult moment.”
However, no specific details regarding the cause of the player’s death have been disclosed at this time. Dwamena had previously experienced a collapse in 2021 while playing for Austrian outfit Blau-Weiss Linz.
Following that incident, he underwent a heart operation and had an automatic defibrillator implanted in his body according to wide reports.
In his career, he played for La Liga sides Zaragoza and Levante during. Both clubs have now paid tribute to Dwamena.
Zaragoza expressed devastation over the news, stating, “You will always be in the memory of Zaragoza’s fans. Rest in peace.”
Levante also offered their condolences, stating that his legacy in the club would endure.
