This suspension comes amid controversies and tensions, with the women's team refusing to participate in national matches until the federation's leadership changes. The suspension lasts for an initial 90 days and prohibits Rubiales from football-related activities and contacting Hermoso or her associates. Rubiales, also UEFA's vice president, was leading a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup hosting rights. The Spanish football federation expressed Rubiales' intent to legally defend himself. In the interim, Vice President Pedro Rocha Junco assumes the role of president.
