Despite Sevilla's poor form in La Liga, sitting 13th and still under threat of relegation, they were able to outperform Manchester United, who currently sits third in the Premier League. After drawing the first leg 2-2, Harry Maguire failed to control a pass from David de Gea after just seven minutes, which allowed Erik Lamela to pick the ball off him and pass it to Youssef En-Nesyri for an easy finish. In the second half, Loic Bade scored a header early on, and En-Nesyri added another after a mistake by David de Gea.

Erik ten Hag expressed his frustration after the game, pointing out the mistakes made by De Gea as the reason for his team's defeat. He admitted that his team was not composed or calm, and that they have to acknowledge the problem. However, he believes that his team has an opportunity to work on their mistakes in their upcoming match against Brighton.

He stated, "It's clear. When we make such mistakes, it's difficult to win a football game. It's a problem, and we have to acknowledge it, but against Brighton, we have an opportunity to work on that. You have seen what I have seen. We were not composed or calm. It's a problem, we can't run away from it. On Sunday we have to step up and show more character and more personality."
