The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
This decision comes after a recommendation by the NFF's Technical and Development Sub-Committee, which met on January 2, 2025, to discuss the appointment. The NFF Executive Committee officially approved the move on January 7, 2025.
Chelle, who is 47 years old, is known for his vast experience in coaching, particularly at the international level. He previously managed Mali’s senior national team and helped lead them to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d’Ivoire. In a closely contested match, Mali was narrowly eliminated after a 2-1 extra-time loss to the eventual champions.

Throughout his career, Chelle has managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. His extensive experience as a player also includes stints at teams such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
The appointment of Chelle comes after the resignation of former head coach Finidi George, who stepped down following the Super Eagles' disappointing performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Austine Eguavoen had served as interim head coach in the meantime, but the Super Eagles faced struggles, including a disappointing draw with South Africa and a surprising defeat to Benin Republic.
Chelle’s immediate task will be to lead the Super Eagles in their campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. The NFF is hopeful that his experience and leadership will guide the team to success on the road to qualification.
