The former Gunners captain, who was a cornerstone in Arsenal’s past successes, believes that a loss in this upcoming match could have significant consequences on Arsenal’s ambitions this season, particularly in their race for the Premier League title. Adams emphasized that falling further behind both Liverpool and Manchester City could make it extremely difficult for Arsenal to mount a serious challenge at the top of the table.

“This isn’t quite a must-win, but it’s definitely a must-not-lose,” Adams stated firmly. “If we fall seven points behind Liverpool and six behind City, our focus might shift more toward securing a Champions League spot rather than realistically competing for the title.”

Adams, who captained Arsenal to four league titles and knows what it takes to maintain title-winning momentum, explained the importance of Arsenal keeping pace with their biggest rivals as the season progresses.

“If you’re within three points by April, you’ve got a shot at the title,” he pointed out, stressing how Manchester City’s consistently strong performances in the final stages of the season often push their closest competitors to the limit. Adams noted City’s depth and quality, especially with their well-rounded squad, and hinted that Arsenal will need a similar depth to remain competitive.

However, Arsenal faces a number of significant obstacles today due to injuries and suspensions that could complicate their efforts. Key defender William Saliba is sidelined following a recent red card, which leaves Arsenal's backline more vulnerable. Additionally, star winger Bukayo Saka, new signing Riccardo Calafiori, and versatile defender Jurrien Timber are all facing injury doubts ahead of this crucial fixture.

Adding to Arsenal’s list of setbacks, club captain Martin Odegaard remains out with a long-term injury, further testing Arsenal’s resources and ability to field a competitive side against a strong Liverpool team.

“Without Saliba, the balance shifts significantly,” Adams remarked, acknowledging the impact of the defender’s absence on the team’s overall structure and solidity. “It’s the first time in years we’re seeing injuries really expose some gaps in Arsenal’s squad depth.”

Drawing from his own experiences in the ’89 title-winning side, Adams reflected on the importance of a solid defensive foundation and squad depth in winning championships. “Back in ’89, we had reliable defensive options and enough depth to withstand injuries. That’s the sort of backbone you need if you’re serious about winning titles,” he added.
