The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has emphasized the need for increased dedication from FCT Administration workers as the government implements the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage. The minister made this statement during an inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja, including the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, the access road to the complex, and the Airport Road to Kuje expressway.
Mrs Grace Adayilo, the acting Head of Civil Service in the FCT, had earlier announced the approval of the minimum wage and payment of arrears to workers. This decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on improving the welfare and standard of living for Nigerian workers.
Addressing the workers, Wike said, “We have approved the N70,000 minimum wage along with arrears, as agreed with the labour union, to enhance the welfare of workers and ensure their commitment to our collective developmental goals for the city.”
He added that the new wage structure should be seen as a motivation for workers to put in greater effort. “With this increase, there is an expectation that workers will demonstrate more dedication and commitment to achieving the required development in the city.”
The minister also cautioned against complacency, saying, “Workers should not adopt a mindset of ‘money has been paid,’ but rather, they should recognize that more work is expected.”
The statement reflects the administration’s commitment to balancing enhanced worker welfare with the demands of improving infrastructure and services within the FCT.
