The Senate has officially begun investigations into the ongoing demolitions of structures in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the establishment of an investigative committee to look into the matter. This decision comes after a motion was raised during Thursday’s plenary session by Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the FCT Senatorial District. Senator Kingibe called attention to the issue, raising concerns about the alleged illegal demolition of properties in the nation’s capital. She expressed her worries about the legality of these demolitions and urged the Senate to take swift action to halt further destruction, particularly of estates that have already been marked for demolition.
Senator Kingibe further highlighted the impact of these demolitions on residents and the need for clear guidelines on the legality of such actions, especially when it comes to properties that may have been built without proper documentation or authorization.
However, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, responded by clarifying that while the Senate could not prevent the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, from continuing with the demolitions, the authority of the courts must also be respected. Akpabio explained that some of the demolitions were being carried out as a result of court orders, which the Minister must obey to avoid contempt of court. He emphasized that the Senate could not directly stop demolitions that had been ordered by the judiciary, as failing to carry out these orders would make the Minister liable for disobeying the courts.
The situation has sparked a wider debate on the legality and fairness of the demolitions, with many questioning the criteria used in identifying which structures are targeted for destruction. As the investigation continues, there are growing calls for more transparency and accountability in the process, with the Senate committee expected to provide further insights into the matter.
The investigation is seen as a critical step in ensuring that the actions taken by the Ministry of the FCT align with legal frameworks, and that the rights of citizens are protected during the process of urban renewal and infrastructure development in Abuja. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for future demolitions and land use policies in the Federal Capital Territory.
