Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has categorically denied any involvement in the impeachment process of Mudashiru Obasa, who served as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly until his removal. The impeachment, which took place on Monday, January 13, 2025, was reportedly prompted by allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, corruption, and financial mismanagement.
The decision to impeach Obasa was approved by 32 members of the Assembly, marking the end of his tenure as Speaker, a position he had held since 2015. Following his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was unanimously elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, clarified the government’s stance in an official statement. He emphasized that the impeachment process was strictly a legislative affair, conducted without any influence or interference from the Executive branch. “It is purely a legislative matter, and the Assembly handled it as they deemed appropriate. It has nothing to do with the governor,” Akosile stated in an interview with The Punch.
He further highlighted the importance of upholding the constitutional principle of the separation of powers, which ensures that the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary operate independently of one another. This principle, he noted, was vital for the proper functioning of a democratic system and must be respected by all parties involved.
Obasa’s removal reportedly stemmed from mounting allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, which created a rift between him and other lawmakers in the Assembly. These issues had led to increasing tension within the legislative body, culminating in his eventual impeachment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has refrained from commenting on the specifics of Obasa’s tenure but is reportedly optimistic about building a more harmonious and collaborative relationship with the new Assembly leadership. Sources close to the government suggest that the governor views the transition as an opportunity to strengthen the legislative-executive partnership in Lagos State.
