The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially announced a prohibition on the use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other fireworks in Abuja during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This move is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all residents during the festive period.
The announcement was made by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, who emphasized the importance of the ban in safeguarding lives and property throughout the season. He stressed that the use of such items poses significant risks to public safety.
In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, it was highlighted that the measure was introduced to protect the community from potential hazards. The statement underlined the dangers associated with firecrackers and fireworks, which include fire outbreaks, injuries, and unnecessary panic within neighborhoods.
“The FCT Police Command warns against the use of firecrackers (knockouts) during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season. The use of these items can lead to unnecessary panic and anxiety within the community. Additionally, they present significant risks, including fire hazards and other preventable incidents,” the Commissioner of Police stated.
The Commissioner further warned that violators of the ban, including sellers and users of firecrackers and fireworks, will face legal consequences. He clarified that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law. The statement also called on community leaders and residents to support this initiative by creating awareness about the potential dangers of using firecrackers and knockouts during celebrations.
Olatunji Disu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order throughout the festive season. He urged all residents to celebrate responsibly and prioritize safety during their activities. He also extended his best wishes for a joyous and safe Christmas and New Year to all residents of the FCT.
In addition, the Commissioner advised residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or security concerns to the Police immediately. He emphasized that public cooperation is essential in ensuring a secure and peaceful environment for everyone during the holidays.
