The Nigerian Police Force has taken into custody a woman who sold her newborn baby, less than two weeks old, for the sum of ₦600,000. The buyer, in turn, resold the baby for a significantly higher price of ₦4 million.

This shocking revelation came to light through a viral post circulating on X (formerly Twitter), where a police officer shared details about the incident. The case is believed to be connected to a suspected baby factory operation within the state.

According to the officer’s report, the mother was taken in by certain individuals who provided care for her throughout her pregnancy. However, after she gave birth, the baby was immediately taken away from her and sold to another woman in exchange for ₦600,000.

Further investigations later uncovered that the woman who initially purchased the child went on to sell the baby to a third party for a much higher sum of ₦4 million. The transaction has sparked outrage on social media, with many people condemning the act and calling for justice.

The police officer who shared the story on X included a video with a caption that explained:

“The girl with long hair got pregnant, and some individuals took care of her during her pregnancy. But later, she was seen without the pregnancy. When asked about her baby, she confessed that a woman had helped her sell the child for ₦600,000. Watch and see how much the baby was eventually sold for. This baby factory business—we are taking serious action against it.”

As the news spread online, many social media users flooded the comment section with their reactions, expressing deep concern about the increasing prevalence of illegal child trafficking and the need for stricter enforcement against such practices.

See some of the reactions below:

@AB_i_NO: “They didn’t do the right thing ooo, but that was not exactly a baby factory case.”

@Ussy_babajo: “In a few years, this ‘baby’ will grow up, join the assembly line of factory-made activists, and start calling Northerners all sorts of names. The cycle continues.”

@Idrees_taheer: “What do you mean by asking ‘why would you sell a baby for 3.5m and give the mother only 600k?’ What is the main crime here? Would it be any less serious if she had been given the full 3.5m?”

@AbiolaVJ: “SP, please always state the date in your introduction for proper documentation and future reference. Good job 👍🏿. The real culprit here is the woman on the left, but it’s unclear what the one in the middle intended for the child. It’s difficult to judge the mother. Her main crime seems to be ignorance.”

@MullingsJane: “This investigation was not properly handled. The woman was trying to confess, but instead of letting her talk, you were interrupting her. Can’t you take a full day to handle this case properly? Or at least make a thorough video recording for better clarity? This could have been done better.”

@ambalium: “The focus should not be on the amount of money involved. The main issue here is the safety of the baby and the legal violations committed by everyone involved.”
