During the 2nd Extra-Ordinary Summit on the Socio-Political Situation in Niger Republic, noteworthy developments have arisen. The session unfolded on Thursday within the esteemed confines of the Old Banquet Hall at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
A distinguished assembly convened for this occasion, spearheaded by ECOWAS Chairman and Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu. Accompanying him were fellow leaders including President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea Bissau, President Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania, President Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, and Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo.
The presence of key statesmen was conspicuous, while The Gambia and Liberia, though unable to send their heads of state, were dutifully represented by their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs. Regrettably absent from the gathering were the leaders of the perturbed nations of Niger Republic, Mali, Chad, and Burkina Faso.
Adding international weight to the event, Non-ECOWAS leaders were also in attendance, notably the Mauritanian and Burundian Presidents. Furthermore, Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, was present. The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson's seat was occupied by Amb. Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, AUC.
