The Calabar Carnival is celebrated as one of the largest street parties in Africa, and this year, Aisha Buhari’s attendance elevated the occasion, adding an extra layer of glamour and cultural significance to the festivities.
Dressed in an impeccable pink outfit, Mrs. Buhari exuded class and confidence while seated in the VIP section of the event, surrounded by fellow dignitaries, which included government officials, celebrities, and international guests. Her participation highlighted her ongoing commitment to promoting Nigerian culture and preserving its rich traditions, as well as her advocacy for cultural exchange and unity within the country. As the carnival's activities unfolded, she enjoyed watching the performances of seven competitive and seven non-competitive bands that took to the streets to display their creative costumes, musical talent, and elaborate dance routines, which thrilled the audience and captured the essence of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage.
Her presence at the event underscored her support for initiatives that celebrate Nigerian arts, traditions, and the country's potential to be a global leader in cultural tourism. The Calabar Carnival has steadily become one of the most anticipated cultural events in Africa, and Aisha Buhari’s participation was a testament to her belief in the power of cultural diplomacy and national unity.
In addition to Aisha Buhari, the event saw the attendance of several other notable personalities, including Mrs. Buhari’s children, Governors AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq (Kwara) and Ahmed Usman Ododo (Kogi), former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment Senator John Owan Enoh, and Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South Senatorial District. The presence of these political figures further highlighted the event’s importance and its role in fostering economic, social, and cultural prosperity in Nigeria. Also in attendance were several international diplomats from organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union, showcasing the carnival’s growing global influence and recognition.
During the flag-off ceremony at Millennium Park in Calabar, Cross River State Governor Prince Bassey Otu emphasized the global relevance of this year’s carnival theme, “Our Shared Prosperity.” He spoke passionately about the need to build economic, social, and cultural prosperity for the benefit of all Nigerians, and he stressed the importance of working together as a nation to ensure sustainable development and shared success. Governor Otu also took a moment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of previous governors, including Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke, and Prof. Ben Ayade, for their tireless efforts in developing and sustaining the carnival, which has grown exponentially since its inception in 2004. Reflecting on the carnival's success, Governor Otu expressed his plans to further enhance the event in the coming years, including the potential introduction of a Diaspora band next year, which would showcase the talent and creativity of Nigerians living abroad.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRasaq also praised the carnival as a globally recognized event that helps to boost Nigeria’s international profile while also contributing significantly to Cross River State’s internally generated revenue. He noted that the event’s growing popularity could make Calabar an even more prominent tourist destination, attracting visitors from all corners of the world. “This event puts Nigeria on the map, both culturally and economically. Hopefully, next year, more people will spend time in Calabar before heading to Lagos for the holiday season,” he said, highlighting the economic potential that the carnival holds for the region and the country as a whole.
Kogi State Governor Ododo also commended Governor Otu’s leadership, acknowledging the enthusiasm and dedication of the carnival participants and the residents of Calabar, whose passion and commitment have made the carnival a resounding success. The carnival continues to be a symbol of Nigeria’s vibrant culture, and this year’s event was no exception, with performances, parades, and celebrations that showcased the best of Nigerian art, music, and dance.
