The visit was officially confirmed by Dada Olusegun, Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, in a post shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, December 17. Olusegun wrote, “The President-Elect of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama paid a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at his residence, Presidential Villa, State House Yesterday.”

This visit comes on the heels of Mahama’s victory in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election. The Electoral Commission of Ghana (ECG), through its chairperson, Jane Mensa, declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the election held last Monday in Accra.

According to the officially declared results, Mahama secured a total of 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total votes cast. He defeated his closest rival, Mahamudu Bawumia, the incumbent vice president and candidate of the ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.6%.

The meeting between President Tinubu and President-elect Mahama is seen as a significant diplomatic gesture, strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. Both leaders are expected to discuss mutual interests, including regional security, economic collaboration, and fostering peace within the West African sub-region. The visit further underscores Nigeria’s role as a key diplomatic partner and stabilizing force within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

John Dramani Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, has pledged to focus on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment as key priorities of his upcoming administration. His victory has been met with optimism among supporters and regional observers, who hope for stronger cooperation between Ghana and its West African neighbors.

President Bola Tinubu, on his part, extended his congratulations to Mahama during the meeting, expressing confidence that his leadership will foster progress and prosperity for the Ghanaian people. Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with Mahama’s administration to strengthen economic ties, promote regional integration, and address common challenges faced by both nations.

The visit was marked by moments of camaraderie, with both leaders exchanging warm gestures and posing for photographs to commemorate the occasion.
