The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep admiration for the esteemed legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, following his decision to withdraw all criminal defamation charges against prominent human rights activist, Dele Farotimi.
Reports indicate that Aare Afe Babalola’s decision to drop the charges came after the intervention of respected traditional leaders across Nigeria, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, who played a significant role in brokering peace and fostering reconciliation between the parties involved.
Reacting to this development on Monday, Peter Obi applauded Aare Afe Babalola for his exemplary leadership and his commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue. Obi, through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, described Babalola’s action as a testament to his dedication to promoting peace and constructive engagement.

According to a report by Vanguard, Umar stated: “We are immensely pleased to learn that this matter has been amicably resolved, and we believe that this outcome underscores the value of dialogue and constructive conflict resolution. Let it be clearly understood: Obi’s visit to Aare Afe Babalola was not about pleading for pardon on behalf of Dele Farotimi. Instead, it was a genuine demonstration of his commitment to fostering peace and resolving disputes constructively.”
Umar further highlighted Obi’s guiding principles, adding: “As a leader, Peter Obi is deeply committed to ensuring that conflicts are resolved peacefully and through dialogue. His involvement in this matter was a reflection of his dedication to these principles. We welcome the news that Aare Afe Babalola has decided to withdraw the charges against Dele Farotimi. This decision is a clear indication of his commitment to peace and reconciliation, and we commend him for this magnanimous gesture.”
Continuing, he added: “This remarkable decision by Aare Afe Babalola also underscores the importance of having leaders who prioritize the peaceful resolution of disputes. It is a reminder that, even in challenging situations, dialogue and understanding can pave the way for positive outcomes.”
Peter Obi’s media aide concluded by emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to sustain peace, saying: “We sincerely appreciate the role played by all those who facilitated this resolution, including the revered traditional rulers whose intervention made this possible. Moving forward, we are optimistic that all parties can work together constructively and continue to make meaningful contributions to the progress of our society.”
