Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for a united response against criminal activities that are destabilizing the nation. His statement came in the wake of the deadly attack by the Boko Haram terrorist group on Sunday, which targeted the peaceful agricultural community of Kayakura in the Doron Baga ward, Borno State.
The attack led to significant casualties, with many residents feared dead or missing. Amnesty International reports that at least 147 residents of Kayakura lost their lives in this brutal assault, further exacerbating the security crisis in the region.
In his statement issued on Friday, Obi referred to the attack as a heartbreaking reminder of the continuous and pressing security threats facing Nigeria. He stressed that such incidents highlight the need for the Nigerian government to prioritize its efforts in securing the country and protecting its citizens from terrorism and other forms of violence.
“The recent terrorist attack and ambush in Borno State, which claimed precious lives and left many missing, is a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges facing our nation,” Obi stated. “This tragedy highlights the urgent need for the government to intensify efforts to secure the country. The fight against terrorism must be resolute, and we urge those in authority to deploy all available resources to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice.”
He further emphasized the importance of adequately equipping and supporting Nigeria’s security forces to tackle these threats effectively. “Our security personnel on the frontlines must be adequately equipped, supported, and motivated to tackle these threats effectively,” Obi added.
The former Governor of Anambra State also expressed his condolences to the grieving families of the victims. He called for a collective effort from all sectors of society to confront the growing insecurity in the country. “As a nation, we must rise above politics to confront this menace. Insecurity is not just a government challenge; it requires a united front from all stakeholders – community leaders, religious leaders, civil society, and every citizen,” he said.
He concluded with a heartfelt message of solidarity: “To the grieving families, no words can fully convey the depth of our sorrow for your loss. Your pain is shared by all Nigerians, and our thoughts and prayers are with you in this moment of profound grief.”
