Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has officially cast his vote in the ongoing local government elections, which have been marred by controversy and security concerns.

The election, organized to fill various leadership positions across Osun’s local government areas, faced opposition from security agencies. According to reports, the Nigeria Police had called for the suspension of the election, citing intelligence reports that indicated possible threats to public safety. However, the Osun State government stood firm in its decision to proceed with the elections, arguing that adequate security measures were in place to ensure a peaceful process.

Speaking to journalists shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit in Ede on Saturday morning, Governor Adeleke expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the exercise. He emphasized the importance of maintaining order and encouraged residents to participate in the process without fear of violence or intimidation.

“The process has been very peaceful. I made a broadcast to my good people of Osun State, urging that this election should be peaceful. They should come out and cast their votes and go home peacefully. We should not give them any chance to say there is violence here or there,” Governor Adeleke stated.

The governor also took to his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account to share his thoughts on the election, reinforcing his commitment to democratic principles and local governance.

“A few minutes ago, I carried out my democratic duty by casting my vote at my polling unit in Ede. I commend the good people of Osun for maintaining a peaceful and orderly atmosphere at polling units across the state and encourage everyone to exercise their democratic right,” he wrote.

Governor Adeleke further highlighted the significance of grassroots elections, noting that they play a crucial role in strengthening democracy and ensuring effective governance at the local level.

“Local government elections are the closest to the grassroots, and getting it right starts with electing the right leaders. Together, we will make Osun great,” he added.

Despite the concerns raised before the polls, reports from various polling units indicate that voting is progressing smoothly in most areas. Security personnel have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any disruptions.
